AlUla in north-west Saudi Arabia is the Kingdom's most striking desert landscape. Its headline is Hegra (Mada'in Salih), the southern city of the Nabataeans, the same people who built Petra. It became Saudi Arabia's first UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008, and its lone tomb, Qasr al-Farid, is one of the most photographed monuments in Arabia.

Add Elephant Rock at sunset, the old town and the canyon scenery, and AlUla easily fills two or three days. Flights connect Riyadh with AlUla; most sites are visited on booked tours.
